What is Credit Utilization and why is it so important?

Managing your credit utilization is important for maintaining a good credit score. 

The more you have in available credit, and the more careful you are in how you use it, the more responsible you will be perceived.


You can easily calculate your own credit utilization!

Add up all of your available credit card debt, and divide it by your total available limits. This will = your % of total credit utilization.


You can also perform this calculation on a per account basis.

If your utilization is too high, it's a signal to cut back on your credit card spending to lower your utilization.


Utilization counts toward 30% of your credit score and is the second biggest factor, next to payment history.

Think about it, if you are borrowing too much money on credit, might you:

  1. Appear to lenders to rely too heavily on credit?
  2. Appear to be only a single financial set back from late payments or default?

Remember, the currently used credit scoring models don't take income into consideration, and your credit profile does not identify your income. 

This is why a maxed out $500 credit card can be just as detrimental to a consumer credit score as a $10,000 maxed out credit card.
